16 members of Tipu Pathan gang shifted to Kolhapur Central Prison
Pune: The state prison authorities on Thursday shifted 16 members of the Tipu Pathan gang from Yerawada Central Prison to Kolhapur Central Prison owing to safety reasons. The gang members were creating ruckus inside the prison and causing legal troubles.
The gang members were arrested by Wanowrie police for opening fire at a builder at Handewadi Road in January this year.
A 25-year-old builder, Nilesh Shekhar Binawat, had escaped unhurt in the incident as the bullets fired by the gang members got stuck inside the door and back of his SUV.
Binawat had registered an FIR against Pathan and his accomplices. Pathan, who is known as Tipu Bhai, has a detailed crime record against his name. During the course of investigation, police arrested Pathan, and others and recovered seven motorcycles, two sickles and a sword from them. A firearm was also recovered later.
A senior prison officer told TOI, “The accused, who are in magisterial custody, were later shifted to Yerawada Central Prison”.
The officer said that the collective behaviour of the gang members was hostile towards prison officials and other inmates. “Considering their poor behaviour in the prison, we decided to shift them to Kolhapur Central Prison. They were shifted to Kolhapur amidst tight security on Thursday,” the officer said.
