NEW DELHI:
Delhi Police was mired in a major
controversy on Saturday when a
CCTV footage went viral showing three cops, including an inspector,
thrashing a man mercilessly for at least five minutes in
southeast Delhi’s
Sarita Vihar.
The
footage showed the inspector and his two subordinates beating a local shopkeeper of the area with stick on a road. The incident happened on Thursday night, as per the date of the footage.
Later, it also emerged that the victim, along with other shopkeepers of the area have submitted a written complaint against the area SHO Ajab Singh, accusing him extrorting money from them.
The footage of the incident shows a man being brought in by two cops in uniform. Initially, the two cops slap and punch the man multiple times as the inspector, who is seen wearing a coat and is in civil clothes, holds the shopkeeper by his collar. A police gypsy is seen parked nearby.
For the next four minutes, the three cops thrash the man with stick, punches, slaps and kicks before letting him go. The victim is visibly injured and is seen limping away after being let off by the cops.
A letter, dated March 5 by the shopkeepers of the area said that there are 38 temporary tin-sheet shops at roadside. “The area SHO regularly comes in our area and demands money for running our shops in this area. This is making our lives very difficult,” the letter, signed by 15 shopkeepers of the area reads.
Confirming the video, DCP (southeast) Chinmoy Biswal said that the matter has come into his notice and they are looking into the incident.
Police, however, said that the said land actually belongs to DDA and they had received the orders to accompany the officials in clearing it for eviction. Sources said that in order to avoid getting evicted, the person who takes the rent from these shopkeepers has started this campaign to dissuade the area cops from stopping the encroachment.
