Lok Sabha elections: Kanimozhi, Raja among DMK candidates

DMK president M K Stalin on Sunday evening announced the names of its candidates in 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu where the party is contesting.

CHENNAI: DMK president M K Stalin on Sunday evening announced the names of its candidates in 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu where the party is contesting.
Out of the total 20 candidates, 13 are first time contestants in the Lok Sabha elections. They are Kanimozhi who has is Rajya Sabha member.
Of the 20 candidates, 18 are graduates, doctors, engineers, lawyers and commerce graduates.

The list also consists of second generation candidates. The constituencies in which second generation candidates are contesting include North Chennai (Dr Kalanidhi Veerasamy, (son of former minister Arcot Veerasamy), Central Chennai ( Dayanidhi Maran, son of late Union minister Murasoli Maran), South Chennai (Tamilachi Thangapandian, daughter of former minister Thangapandian) Vellore (Kadhir Anand, son of DMK treasurer S Duraimurugan), Kallakurichi (Gautama Sigamani, son of former DMK minister K Ponmudi, and Tuticorin (Kanimozhi, daughter of late DMK chief M Karunanidhi.)
The youngest among the candidates is Dhanush M Kumar (42) contesting from Tenkasi reserved constituency and the oldest is former Union minister T R Baalu, 78, contesting from Sriperumbudur constituency.
Former Union environment and highways minister Baalu was elected from South Chennai in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004 Lok Sabha elections and from Sriperumbudur in 2009. In the 2014 elections, he lost from Sriperumbudur. He was a former Rajya Sabha member between 1986 and 1992.

Former Union minister S S Palanimanickam is re-contesting from Thanjavur constituency. For Palanimanickam, Thanjavur constituency has been a bellwether constituency since 1996 Lok Sabha elections. He had won continuously but was refused ticket in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and DMK lost this constituency.
Former Union minister A Raja, accused in the 2G case but acquitted by a special court two years ago, is back in the race in the Nilgiris constituency. Raja was elected to the lower house from Perambalur constituency in 1996, 1999 and 2004. In 2009, he won from the Nilgiri constituency but lost in 2014.
