HOWRAH: An unidentified youth was allegedly burnt alive by some goons at a dumping ground on the rear side of NISCO employees' quarters at Rabindra Pally under Howrah City police area.
Around 8am on Sunday, some locals raised alarm after spotting thick smoke at the dumping area. One of them said an unbearable stench was coming from that direction. Some also tried to find out what was going on, but the smoke prevented them from getting closer.

Later, police were informed. Some officers, who reached the spot, could barely figure out that a youth was set on fire. However, because of the suffocating smoke, they couldn't rescue him. Two fire tenders later reached the spot and doused the flames. But by then, the youth had already died of 100% burns, said a police officer.
Later, cops found that his hands and legs were tied with rope and his mouth was strapped so that he could not raise an alarm. Investigators also found marks of two-wheeler tyres on the ground.
Deputy commissioner (north) of Howrah City Police, Amit Rathod, said: "We are trying to ascertain the identity of the youth. We have got some clues and hope to crack the case soon. All neighbouring police stations have already been alerted so that he can be identified at the earliest."
Police said the viscera will be preserved for forensic investigation. Forensic team will collect samples of the burnt body parts for investigation. Preliminary probe hinted that petrol was poured on the youth before he was set on fire.
