Rs 70L seized from Udupi Dy RTO’s house
Bengaluru: Sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Monday raided the Mangaluru residence of Udupi deputy regional transport officer RM Vernekar and seized Rs 70 lakh cash, property documents and other material.
The raid was carried out after Vernekar and Munaf, a security guard at the Regional Transport Office and Vernekar’s agent, were arrested while allegedly accepting Rs 4,000 as a bribe on Saturday from IT employee Vignesh, whose car was gutted in the blaze at the Aero India show last month in Bengaluru and was seeking clearance of his vehicle’s road tax documents.

As Vignesh had purchased the car just a month ago, he was eligible to get the road tax refund and had applied for getting relevant documents from the transport office. He had already received his insurance amount of Rs 3 lakh and supposed to get a road tax refund of Rs 65,000.
Vernekar and Munaf demanded 10% of the amount as bribe. Vignesh refused to pay the bribe and brought the matter to the ACB’s notice on March 15. At ACB’s prompting, Vignesh agreed to pay the bribe. On Saturday morning, a case was registered and the two men were arrested while accepting the cash from Vignesh.
According to ACB sources, cash bundles were hidden in different parts of the Mangaluru house, including the cupboard and table drawers.
ACB SP ACB, Sanjeev Patil said they’ll continue the search. “It took more than 20 hours to search Vernekar’s house which is owned by his wife and mother.”
