Two killed as building collapses in Dharwad

In a tweet, CM Kumaraswamy says rescue operation is on and "five people have been extricated" from under the debris.

Two people were killed and several suspected to be trapped under the debris as a multi-storey building collapsed at Dharwad on Tuesday afternoon.

Deputy Commissioner M. Deepa, Police Commissioner M. N. Nagaraj and other senior officials were directing the rescue operations. Nagesh D.L., Deputy Commissioner of Police, said eight people had been recovered from the rubble so far "including dead and alive".

Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy expressed "shock" over the incident on Twitter. He said through the tweet that "five people have been extricated" from under the debris.

"Shocked to learn about the collapse of an under-construction building in Dharwad. I have instructed the Chief Secretary to supervise rescue operations. I have also directed the CS to send additional resources and expert rescuers by a special flight to Dharwad," he tweeted.
