(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The death toll in the collapse of a multi-storey commercial building under construction in Karnataka rose to four yesterday, police said.
Sixty-two people have been rescued, police inspector M I Basapur said from Dharwad, about 400km northwest of Bengaluru.
Rescuers were still searching for people who may be trapped under the debris, he said.
A 25-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team flew in from Lucknow to undertake rescue operations, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy said.
Building collapses are frequent in India, with a string of accidents reported in recent years. Critics say many private builders use inferior construction material to cut corners on costs or bribe officials to bypass regulations.
Last September five people were killed after an apartment block collapsed in Delhi.
Just months earlier a six-storey building collapsed on the outskirts of the capital, killing nine.
