Cape Town - Our pick of just some of our favourite LGBTQ+ series and movies currently streaming in SA. If any TV bosses are reading this...we need more please!
1. Below Her Mouth (Showmax)
Jasmine thought she had it all - a career and a fiancé - when she meets the daring Dallas, who pursues her and tempts her into a relationship. This quickly turns to steamy passion in this provocative movie for adults only. (Read our review here)
2. Sally4Ever (Showmax)
When Sally is courted by the free-spirited Emma, she drops her boring fiancé for a wild affair. Emma might not be as harmless as she seems – but maybe that’s exactly what Sally needs. Quirky British comedy. (Read our review here)
3. Looking (Showmax)
This critically acclaimed HBO dramedy follows three gay men, Patrick, Dom and Augustin, who live in San Francisco. The friends support one another as they navigate life, relationships, sex, and family.
4. The L Word (Showmax)
There are 97 sex scenes in the full boxset of this steamy series about a group of lesbian women in LA, and they’re all available to stream on Showmax. Having launched in 2004, this show was groundbreaking for queer representation, perhaps only eclipsed by the American series Queer as Folk, which launched in 2000 (and which is allegedly getting a reboot in 2019).
5. The Fosters (Showmax)
Talk about couple goals. Stef and Lena, the two moms in this blended family of biological and adopted children, have a marriage that is so strong, spontaneous and supportive we can’t help being envious. All five seasons of this drama, about the Foster family and their struggles when they welcome troubled Callie into their home, are only on Showmax.
6. The Duke of Burgundy (DStv Now)
Kinky and twisted and dark, this indie film tells the story of a lepidopterist and her lover. It’s an arthouse cult favourite, which means it might be too high-brow for some, but it received rave reviews from critics, like this one from the Washington Post: “In this lush, artfully constructed erotic fantasy, writer-director Peter Strickland both engages the images and ideas of soft-core dominance-and-submission narratives, while also questioning them.”
7. Everything Sucks! (Netflix)
While the show starts off by focusing on a boy called Luke and his infatuation with Kate, the principal’s daughter, Kate’s feelings for bad girl Emaline soon eclipse anything Ben could do to get her (and our) attention. With its 90s soundtrack and bittersweet nostalgia for the VHS era, this teen coming-out comedy gifted us one of our favourite and most anticipated on-screen first kisses ever. When we found out it was cancelled, and that we’d never get to find out what happened with Kate and Emaline, we were bereft.
8. Sense8 (Netflix)
Perhaps more a sci-fi drama thriller than a “queer show” as such, Sene8’s Nomi and Amanita must be one of the most representative LGBTQI couples on TV. Nomi is a trans woman and lesbian hacktivist who marries her cisgender girlfriend Amanita. No matter what the two go through, with Nomi’s sensate status and the FBI’s plans to lobotomise her, their relationship is one of the most honest, loving, passionate and caring we’ve ever seen on TV - queer or otherwise.
9. Queer Eye (Netflix)
It's baaaack! Season 3! This reboot of the original Bravo series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy is a total hit and will make you feel good from start to end! The show features the Fab Five: Antoni Porowski (foodie), Tan France (fashion), Karamo Brown (culture), Bobby Berk (interior design), and of course the beautiful Jonathan Van Ness (grooming).
