Ultimately, though, your Library is about connecting people to literacy and to each other.

This week’s column is just a little peek into the many inspiring interactions our staff and programmers have every day.

Take this story, from a children’s programmer, about a young boy who likes dinosaurs:

I showed him our new section markers so he could find the dinosaur books all by himself. He was very excited about this. He picked out a book and asked if I would read it to him. I suggested he read it to Gil-bert the fish. (APL has a reading fish for children) He frowned and said, “I can’t read, but you can read it to me and the fish.”  How could I say no?  So, we read the book. As soon as it was done, he hopped up and got another dinosaur book, and another!

Overheard in the Children’s Area, a conversation between a mother and her 4-year-old boy:

Mother: It’s time to go.

Boy: I don’t want to go

Mother: We can come back tomorrow.

Boy: I don’t want to go (slightly louder).

Mother: We can come back Wednesday.

Boy: I’m unavailable on Wednesday.

Then, in a STEAM program for ages 6-8, where participants were learning the magical intricacies of building Leprechaun traps, one boy was asked what he was making as a lure for his snare:

I’m making a girl!

Libraries are full of stories, some yet to be read, and some of them waiting to be told.
