PATNA: Congress president Rahul Gandhi will launch election campaign in Bihar from Purnia on Saturday. The rally assumed significance after former Purnia MP Uday Singh left BJP and joined Congress on Wednesday. Uday had lost to Santosh Kushwaha of JD(U) in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
“People from Purnia, Kishanganj, Katihar and Araria Lok Sabha constituencies will participate in the rally,” Purnia Congress president Indu Sinha said on Friday.

Around 69 lakh voters will exercise their franchise in the four Lok Sabha constituencies of Seemanchal in two phases on April 18 and 23. The Kishanganj seat situated along the Indo-Bangladesh border has 70% Muslim voters. JD(U) had managed to wrest this seat from BJP in 2014.
In the changed scenario when BJP and JD(U) are part of the NDA, the four seats of Seemanchal are considered important. Apart from Katihar, BJP had not won any seat in Seemanchal in 2014 despite the Modi wave. That’s why the NDA has given maximum seats in Seemanchal region to JD(U).

Meanwhile, the district administration has made elaborate security arrangements for the Congress rally, the second after its Jan Akansha rally in Patna on February 3, which was addressed by Rahul and other prominent leaders of the Mahagathbandan or Grand Alliance.
“We are coordinating with the Special Protection Group (SPG) personnel, who arrived from Delhi today. The protocol for the SPG protectees will be followed,” Purnia SP Vishal Sharma told this newspaper over the phone.
Purnia district magistrate Pradeep Kumar Jha said the officials discussed the rally-related issue with Congress leaders. “The administration has sought a list of prominent leaders who will address the rally,” he said.
Senior Congress leaders were camping at Purnia since Rahul’s programme was finalized on Wednesday. Uday’s supporters said they would not leave any stone unturned to make the rally a grand success.
AICC general secretary and Bihar in charge Shaktisinh Gohil and state Congress president Madan Mohan Jha are among prominent leaders to address the rally at Rangbhoomi Maidan.
