A top model convicted of slapping a flight attendant across the face after yelling obscenities and racial slurs on board a plane could be jailed.

Miss Australia finalist Adau Mornyang denied drunkenly attacking the male cabin crew member on a United Airlines flight from Melbourne to Los Angeles on January 21.

The 24-year-old, who was restrained by air marshals, was found guilty of a felony charge of interference with a flight crew and a misdemeanour assault count in a US courtroom.

Mornyang has claimed that she drank two glasses of wine and took prescription drugs before going to sleep, and all she can remember is "waking up after sleeping for eight hours".

However, flight attendants claim she had downed five or six glasses of wine before she was cut off.

Fellow passengers had complained about Mornyang flailing her arms and yelling obscenities and racial slurs several hours into the flight, said prosecutors.

She shouted at a flight attendant who approached her and slapped him across the face.

The cabin crew member tried to restrain Mornyang until air marshals who were on board made their way to that part of the plane and detained her.

The air marshals were forced to sit with the model in a staff area at the back of the plane for the rest of the flight, prosecutors said.

Mornyang, who lives in Melbourne, was on her way to New York at the time.

She recently modelled at New York Fashion Week and has been a Miss World Australia finalist.

A statement from the US Department of Justice said: "According to the evidence presented at trial, several hours into the flight, passengers approached a flight attendant to complain about Mornyang’s disruptive behaviour, which included flailing her arms and yelling obscenities and racial slurs."

“When the flight attendant approached to assess the situation, Mornyang began to shout at the flight attendant and then slapped him across his face.

"The flight attendant attempted to restrain Mornyang until federal air marshals could assist.

“The federal air marshals were forced to stay with Mornyang in the rear galley of the plane for the remainder of the flight.”

Mornyang, who was born in South Sudan and moved to Australia aged 10 as a refugee, claimed she only remembers waking up after sleeping for eight hours, the Herald Sun reported.

She claimed she fell asleep after drinking two glasses of wine and taking prescription pills .

She said: "I was so confused and begging and pleading for them to tell me what I did.

"I was ignored, I was in and out of consciousness, and was later locked up in federal prison still with no memory of what I was arrested for.

"This whole alleged slapping is a big shock to me and I cry every night wondering why I have no memory of it. How I could of done it while asleep?"

Mornyang has accused the flight attendants of ruining her career.

The model is due to be sentenced in June.

The maximum sentence is 21 years in prison.
