NEW DELHI: PWD officials expect to get clearance for the ambitious north-south corridor plan within a month and said the project will be completed in time as its alignment does not involve hurdles related to land acquisition. "We are hopeful that UTTIPEC will give its nod in a month's time and work will start in full swing thereafter," an official said.

The corridor will pass over congested stretches such as Pankha Road, Kirti Nagar and Dabri Mod before touching down ahead of UER-II (near NH-8), officials said.
The first proposal for a north-south corridor was floated two years ago but since the alignment was not approved, amendments have been made and a new design submitted.
Initially, officials wanted to construct a part of this corridor over the Najafgarh drain, but the plan was dropped. An official said the corridor will be largely elevated and the two tunnels will be built at spots where there is no space to make an elevated road. "The tunnel will have all modern facilities for fire safety, ventilation, lighting, CCTV cameras, etc," said a PWD official.
While the corridor will be a big relief for vehicular traffic coming from north Delhi, the government plans to start high-speed buses on the elevated corridor to provide affordable public transport to lakhs of Delhiites. Officials said they will also have a dedicated corridor for electric high-speed buses on the stretch, a first for the city.

While the north-south corridor is likely to get a go-ahead from UTTIPEC, the much awaited east-west corridor between Anand Vihar and Tikri Border too has got much-awaited approvals although the project still has a few more hurdles to cross.
"The east-west and north-south corridors will intersect at Karampura near Punjabi Bagh," an official said.
According to PWD officials, there is need to create additional infrastructure to accommodate increasing number of vehicles on the north-south corridor. The corridor will run through west Delhi and partly bypass the ridge area.
Once approved by UTTIPEC, the tendering process will start and the state government will shift its focus to the east-west corridor. Officials said work on the elevated flyover will be completed in a single phase as a phased implementation will disrupt traffic for a longer period.
