BAREILLY: In a gruesome act, three men allegedly set their 40-year-old elder sister on fire after the latter asked them to return Rs 10,000 borrowed from her.
The woman, identified as Kamlesh Devi, succumbed to her injuries on Thursday. The incident occurred at Kutkapur village under Hafizganj police station on Wednesday. Investigation is underway and five persons have been detained.
Police said they would lodge an FIR once the post-mortem report is out. The woman is survived by two children and her husband. The husband works as a daily-wage worker.
Hafizganj police station house officer, Saurabh Singh, said, “The accused brothers were identified as Dhanpal (35), Ramesh (32) and Umesh (28) - all resident of Kutkapur village.”
According to Kamlesh Devi’s neighbours, it all started a month ago when the woman’s brother Ramesh borrowed Rs 10,000 for personal work, and he promised to return the money in a month. When Kamlesh Devi went to her maternal house to meet her parents on Wednesday evening, her three brothers were also present. After meeting Kamlesh Devi, her parents left for the market. Devi then asked Ramesh to return her money. During a heated argument, Dhanpal and Umesh tied Devi’s hands while Ramesh poured kerosene on her body. They then locked the door and left her alone in the house.
“Neighbours rushed to the house and took her to a nearby hospital, where Devi succumbed to her injuries,” Singh said, adding, “We are yet to receive any complaint letter. But, we are investigating this case. Five persons have been detained and we will nab the accused soon. The body has been sent for autopsy and we will take appropriate action after the post-mortem report is out.”
