BHU chief proctor booked in student's murder

VARANASI: Banaras Hindu University (BHU) chief proctor Royana Singh and six others have been made accused in the Gaurav Singh murder case that took place on the varsity campus on Tuesday late evening.
Holding Gaurav’s killing as unfortunate, BHU administration announced holiday on Wednesday. However, angered over his killing a group of students closed the BHU main gate and staged demonstration demanding resignation of vice chancellor, arrest of chief proctor and other accused persons.
In view of tension prevailing on campus, heavy police and paramilitary forces remained deployed to avoid any untoward incident.
Gaurav Singh, a MCA-II student, who was rusticated from the varsity in December 2018 after he along with other students was booked in case of rioting and arson on campus, was standing with his friends on Tuesday evening when some motorcycle-borne miscreants opened indiscriminate fire on him and fled the scene. Seriously injured Gaurav was immediately rushed to trauma centre, where he succumbed to injuries after midnight.
Timely intervention of police averted clashes on campus following this incident as initially inmates of Gaurav’s hostel attacked Birla C hostel with bricks. Cops dispersed their gathering.
On getting information Gaurav’s father, Rakesh Prasad Singh, a native of Akhri in Rohania area and employed at BHU press, reached Trauma Centre with other family members. Before the doctors declared that Gaurav had died heavy police force and paramilitary personnel were deployed on Trauma Centre as well as varsity campus.
In his complaint with the police, Gaurav's father Rakesh Prasad Singh alleged that the attack on his son was a part of the conspiracy by chief proctor Ashutosh Tripathi and five others.

SSP Anand Kulkarni said that following the complaint by Rakesh Prasad, police booked BHU chief proctor Royana Singh, Ashutosh Tripathi, Rupesh Tiwari, Kumar Mangalam, Vinay Dwivedi and two unidentified persons under section 147, 148, 149, 120B, 302 and 34 of IPC and 7 CL(A) act. The police have already taken four accused persons under custody.
BHU spokesperson Rajesh Singh said that the varsity administration mourned the unfortunate incident of killing of Gaurav and declared holiday on Wednesday.
On the other hand, a group of students gathered near varsity main gate and staged massive demonstration. They were demanding justice for Gaurav, immediate arrest of chief proctor and resignation of VC.
SSP Kulkarni said that as a precautionary measure heavy police force was deployed in and around the campus. SP City Dinesh Kumar Singh and many other senior officials were monitoring the situation.
