LUCKNOW: The state government on Wednesday approached the Election Commission seeking permission to initiate stringent penal action against SP Barabanki Satish Kumar in connection with an extortion case where a police sub-inspector deprived three officers of a Kolkata investment firm of Rs 65 lakh. The accused sub-inspector Anup Yadav has already been arrested and sent to jail.
State director general of police OP Singh had recommended action against Kumar after a preliminary inquiry into the alleged extortion case found his role under the scanner.

ADG, law and order, Anand Kumar told TOI that an official statement about action against SP Barabanki would be made, if any, by the EC only.
Reports said S-I Anup Yadav, posted at cyber cell in Barabanki, was probing a case in which employees of a Kolkata-based investment firm was accused of operating a Ponzi scheme. During the probe, Yadav reportedly took Rs 65 lakh from the accused to close the probe but later refused to allow them any relief following which the victims approached the DGP who, in turn, ordered a probe. Yadav was arrested after an initial investigation found the charges true.
