Miryalaguda boy bags 7th rank in UPSC

30 rank holders are from Telugu states.

Hyderabad: Miryalaguda student Karnati Varun Reddy has bagged the seventh rank in the UPSC examination in the results declared on Friday.

More than 30 rank holders are believed to be from the two Telugu states. Telugu student Ankitha Chowdary bagged the 14th rank.

The all India topper is Kanishak Kataria of Rajasthan, who completed his BTech from IIT-Bombay with mathematics as his optional subject. He is working as a data analyst. The topper among women was Srushti Jayant Deshmukh who stood fifth overall. Ms Deshmukh is a chemical engineer from the Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya, Bhopal

Mr Varun Reddy’s father Dr Janardhan Reddy is an ophthamologist in Miryalaguda district and mother, Ms Nagamani, works in the agriculture department.

Speaking to this newspaper, Dr Janardhan Reddy said, “Varun wanted to become the chief executive officer of a corporate company but it was my ambition to see him as an IAS officer.”

He said Varun Reddy moved to Delhi four years ago to prepare for the UPSC exam. He secured the 166th rank in his previous attempt and joined the IRS. Even while he was training in Nagpur, he prepared for the UPSC exam and secured the seventh rank, Dr Janardhan Reddy said. “I am extremely proud for my son’s achievement. I hail from a village and I always wanted my son to be in the administrative services,” the doctor said.

Soon after the results were announced, Mr Varun Reddy left for home. Dr Janardhan Reddy said he was a computer science student and had secured the 27th rank in the IIT and went on to pursue further education.

Among other students, G. Surya Sai Praveen secured the 64th rank, Mallarapu Naveen 75th.

Among the top 25 rankers were 15 men and 10 women. A total of 759 candidates, 577 men and 182 women, have been recommended for appointment to the Indian Administrative Services and IPS.

The written part of the examination was held by UPSC in September-October and interviews in February-March 2019.
