VARANASI: Lanka police on Friday arrested Rupesh Singh, accused in the killing of expelled student Gaurav Singh on Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus on April 2. He was produced before court and sent to jail.
A pistol used in the killing was also recovered from the possession of Rupesh.
With Rupesh’s arrest, the total number of accused arrested in the case has gone up to three.

Earlier, on Thursday two main accused — Kumar Mangalam Singh of Faizabad and Ashutosh Tripathi of Banda — were arrested by the Lanka police near Lautubir temple on NH-2. A foreign-made knife was also recovered from them.
SP (City) Dinesh Kumar Singh said Rupesh had suffered serious injuries when Gaurav’s supporters had brutally beaten him at Trauma Centre after Gaurav’s murder on April 2. Rupesh was admitted to DDU district hospital for treatment of the injuries he suffered in the assault. After Gaurav’s father made him an accused in the FIR lodged by Lanka police in this connection, police had taken him under custody and he was being treated at the hospital under police custody.

The SP said that when condition of Rupesh improved, Lanka cops arrested him and on his tip off they also recovered a pistol used in killing Gaurav.
He said that raids to nab the fourth accused, Vinay, and two unidentified shooters were continuing. Police were also investigating the role of BHU chief proctor Royana Singh, who was made accused for conspiring the killing of Gaurav by his father, said police.
On April 2 evening, Gaurav was shot multiple times outside Birla C hostel. He succumbed to bullet injuries at BHU’s Trauma Centre on the same night. Gaurav’s father had lodged an FIR against five identified and two unidentified persons.
The BHU chief proctor had also been made an accused in the case.
