Ignou professor slammed for Gandhi remark
NEW DELHI: The history department of Dyal Singh College has condemned the remarks made by an Ignou professor, who said “because Gandhi accepted Partition...if I was alive then, I would have killed him too”. The department has now demanded an apology from the professor.
The history professor, Kapil Kumar, was invited by the DU college to speak on ‘Freedom Struggle: Unearthing Suppressed Realities’.
Kumar accepted that he made the statement and claiming that Mahatma Gandhi agreed to Partition, he added, “I was talking about why Nathuram Godse killed Gandhi. I don’t know the mindset of either Gandhi or Godse. But if somebody was trying to divide my nation, I would have killed him too”.
Kumar said Gandhi was initially opposed to Partition, but later accepted it. “Gandhi’s death happened several times. First, when those politicians who were behind Gandhi stopped listening to him...an ideological death. Then Gandhi committed suicide by accepting Partition. Then Godse killed him...and finally, people are killing him today,” he said.
The history department came out with a statement to condemn the professor. “The professor asserted that Gandhi had accepted Partition. He was at a loss to provide any specific reference or evidence for this conclusion when confronted by a faculty member,” said head of the history department, Shantanu Das.
The statement said that Kumar’s “derision of Gandhi touched a new low when he valorised Nathuram Godse and was validating an act of murder”.
