Nizamabad ryots change tack, want to split votes for TRS defeat
HYDERABAD: With just 48 hours left for the campaigning to end, over 150 Nizamabad farmers-contestants in the fray for the Lok Sabha elections have changed their tack. Instead of seeking votes for their nominee, the farmers’ joint action committee (JAC) has now asked contestants to seek votes for themselves. Reason: Split votes and ensure defeat of TRS nominee K Kavitha.
As their demands for getting a turmeric board and higher minimum support price (MSP) for jowar getting national attention, the JAC has claimed their nominations have done the trick and preparing for the final meeting at Armoor on April 9 (Tuesday), the last day of campaign.
“Now, tension is palpable even among nominees of main parties. TRS even invited TDP strongman Mandava Venakateswara Rao to join their party. We want to keep up the heat,” A Saya Reddy, a JAC member, said.
The JAC would request people to vote for a farmer of their choice. “Our earlier strategy of supporting a nominee appears impractical and our purpose of giving tough competition to the main parties may not be served,” other farmers said.
Curiously, Congress candidate Madhu Yaskhi Goud is missing from the campaign scene for the past few days leaving the field to Kavitha and D Aravind of BJP.
Meanwhile, farmers held preparatory meetings for Tuesday’s big event at Armoor, known for turmeric market. “Main parties are trying to lure voters based on caste, but we are asking voters to send a farmer as our MP. So, the representative will make a lot of difference,” KS Reddy, another farmer, said.
