DINDIGUL

AIADMK candidate for Karur Lok Sabha constituency M. Thambi Durai was prevented from seeking votes at Landakottai in Gujiliamparai union in Dindigul district, which borders Karur district, on Monday as the villagers, mostly women, vented their ire at the MP for not having taken any step to supply them hygienic drinking water.

Vedasandur MLA Paramasivam and AIADMK cadre were accompanying Mr. Thambi Durai, when he was stopped at the entrance of the village.

The villagers told him that they had approached officials concerned a number of times, requesting them to prevent sewage getting into drinking water supply line. But no action was taken on their plea, they said. “You (Mr. Thambi Durai) were not accessible.Whenever we visited your office, the standard response we got was you were in New Delhi,” the women said.

When Mr. Thambi Durai told the villagers that he would look into their grievance and expressed his inability to solve the problem immediately since model code of conduct was in force, the women said that they would not vote for him and urged him to go back.

Mr. Paramasivam tried to pacify the villagers, but the women said: “ We are forced to drink the stinking water for three months now. With our daily wage, we cannot purchase mineral water,” they said.

When some local youth attempted to videograph the happenings on their mobile phones, the AIADMK cadre stopped them, leading to an altercation between them. However, the party men soon left the spot.
