CSE students on hunger strike at Gopalganj BSMRSTU
Students of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) in Goplaganj went on hunger strike since Monday morning.
The agitating students are demanding punishment for alleged sexual harassment of two female students by Akkas Ali, the chairman of CSE department, in January.
The demonstrators also launched a mass signature campaign to press home their demand.
On Sunday, the BSMRSTU authorities placed Akkas Ali on suspension over the allegation while students staged demonstrations against him in front of the university's administrative building.
The authorities the same day also formed a four-member probe committee to investigate into the incident and asked it to submit its report within five working days, according to Nuruddin Ahmad, registrar of BSMRSTU.
Earlier, two female students of CSE department in a written complaint said Akkas Ali used to make obscene comments in front of female students and he used to make inappropriate physical contact with each complainant whenever they needed to see him in his office.
Rebutting the accusations, Akkas Ali said the allegations are false and those were made as a conspiracy against him.
