Modi cites 'Bofors sins' to counter Rahul's Rafale jibe

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday attempted to turn the tables on Congress president Rahul Gandhi, citing the Bofors scam to blunt the edge of the latter's attack on the Rafale deal. Addressing a poll rally here, Modi indicated that the Congress chief was "burdened" with "Bofors sins" of his late father (Rajiv Gandhi) and therefore, was accusing others of corruption. The Bofors deal, signed in 1986, was believed to be one of primary reasons for the Rajiv Gandhi-led Congress' defeat in the 1989 Lok Sabha polls.

Unhappy Alpesh Thakor finally exits Congress

Prominent OBC leader from Gujarat and MLA Alpesh Thakor quit the Congress Wednesday a day ahead of the first phase of polling in the country. Earlier in the day, Gujarat Kshatriya Thakor Sena, an outfit floated by him, had decided to sever its ties with the Congress. Speculation was rife that Thakor may quit the Congress as he was unhappy with the local party leadership. Though he was keen to contest from Patan Lok Sabha seat, the Congress chose former MP Jagdish Thakor. Alpesh had joined the Congress before the 2017 Assembly polls and won from Radhanpur seat in Patan district.

Sonia Gandhi to file nomination from Rae Bareli on Thursday

RAE BARELI: UPA chairperson and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi will file her nomination papers for the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat on Thursday and hold a road show here. Sonia Gandhi and her family members will take part in a 'havan' at the Congress' central office. She will undertake a 700-metre road show before filing the nomination, party spokesman LKP Singh said. Sonia Gandhi is trying to retain the seat for the fifth time. The seat, which will head for voting in the fifth-phase on May 6, will see a straight contest between Sonia Gandhi and Dinesh Pratap Singh, who had recently joined the BJP after leaving the Congress. The Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party have not fielded any candidate in this Congress bastion. Sonia Gandhi had won the seat in 2004, 2006 (bypolls), 2009 and 2014.

BJP portraying itself as angel and Opposition as devil: TMC leader Derek O'Brien

Launching a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien on Wednesday said that in the guise of on-going raids the BJP is portraying itself as an 'angel' and the Opposition as a 'devil.' Earlier in the day, three TMC leaders including Derek met the Election Commission of India (ECI) and take up the issue of searches conducted at several places across the country. Speaking to media persons here after meeting the EC, Derek said: "The most corrupt party in the world is the BJP. Now they are targetting Opposition to show that they are angels, and we (Opposition) are devils." "But they are the most corrupt party in the world. The only thing the Prime Minister knows is how to cheat India." "It is sad that critics have no other options but to say that Nirvachan (election) Commission is becoming Nikkamma (inefficient) and Nirasha (sad) Commission," he said. Derek said: "We put forth 10 questions before the EC including the transfer of police officers at the direction of BJP officers and the people associated with it. The BJP has transferred crores of rupees. Kolkata airport officer was also transferred as the party was bringing money in a private plane. Why are they doing so?"
