    Sonia Gandhi declares assets worth Rs 11.82 crore

    UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi Thursday declared personal assets worth Rs 11.82 crore, according to the affidavit she submitted while filing her nomination papers here. During the 2014 general elections, she had declared total assets worth Rs 9.28 crore. Gandhi's movable assets stand at Rs 4.29 crore, according to the affidavit. She has given a loan of Rs 5 lakh to her son and Congress president Rahul Gandhi, the affidavit says. She has cash worth Rs 60,000 and bank deposits of Rs 16.5 lakh.

    EC transfers Assam returning officer amid first phase poll

    The Election Commission Thursday transferred the returning officer of Karimganj Lok Sabha constituency of Assam after receiving complaints against him from the central observers. Phoni Bhushan Roy, who is also the Deputy Commissioner of Karimganj district, was shifted on a day when the first phase Lok Sabha poll was held in five other constituencies of the state. Roy was replaced by M S Manivannan, director of the state agriculture department, sources in the state CEO's office said

    58% polling in Uttarakhand's 5 Lok Sabha seats

    At least 58 per cent of Uttarakhand's 78.56 lakh voters cast their votes to seal the fate of 52 candidates in the fray for the hill state's five Lok Sabha constituencies where the battle was mainly between archrivals BJP and Congress. Medium to brisk polling was recorded in most polling booths in all five seats -- Tehri-Garhwal, Garhwal, Nainital, Almora and Haridwar -- with long queues witnessed in many places and people standing for hours to cast their votes. "The polling was peaceful and fair. The polling percentage was tentatively 58 per cent," said Chief Electoral Officer Saujanya. Nainital and Haridwar seats recorded 66 per cent voting which was highest in the state. The lowest turnout of 49 per cent was in Almora seat while it was 50 per cent at Garhwal

    Naxal-affected Bastar records 57% voting

    Altogether 57 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the naxal-affected Bastar Lok Sabha constituency of Chhattisgarh Thursday. Election officials said the figure may go up as several polling parties which manned booths in remote interior areas will return only Friday, after which the final turnout will be calculated.

    63% polling in 8 UP Lok Sabha seats

    Eight Lok Sabha constituencies in western Uttar Pradesh recorded an average voter turnout of 63 per cent till 6.p.m, according to the chief electoral officer. The percentage turnout is expected to increase further since voters were still in queue when the figures last came in. According to chief electoral officer Venkateshwar Lu, the highest polling percentage (70. 69) was reported from Saharanpur whereas Ghaziabad recorded the lowest of 57.6 per cent. He said there was no case for a repoll in any of the constituencies.

    Manipur records highest polling percentage at 78.20 per cent in first phase of Lok Sabha polls

    In the first phase of polling for the Lok Sabha elections Manipur recorded the highest polling percentage at 78.20 per cent (upto 5 pm), followed by Assam at 68 per cent, Lakshadweep at 65.9 per cent, Meghalaya at 62 per cent, Telangana 60.57 per cent followed by others. The Hindi heartland states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar recorded poll percentage of 59.77 and 50.26 per cent respectively. Among the eight Parliamentary constituencies of Uttar Pradesh that went to poll today, the highest poll percentage was of Saharanpur at 63.76 per cent, followed by Muzaffarnagar at 60.80 per cent, Bijnor at 60.60 per cent and then others.

    On poll duty, Home Guard jawan dies from cardiac arrest

    A 40-year-old Home Guard jawan on poll duty in Haridwar district of Uttarakhand died from cardiac arrest Thursday, police said. Dharampal, who hailed from Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh, suffered a cardiac arrest while he was on election duty, they said. A postmortem is being conducted and his family has been informed, they added.

    Markets tick higher in cautious trade as Lok Sabha polls begin

    Benchmark equity indices ended with marginal gains Thursday, with investors largely remaining on the sidelines as voting began in the first phase of the Lok Sabha polls. The 30-share BSE Sensex inched up 21.66 points, or 0.06 per cent, to close at 38,607.01. The broader NSE Nifty settled 12.40 points, or 0.11 per cent, higher at 11,596.70. Traders said market mood was cautious as polling began in 91 constituencies spread across 18 states and two union territories in the first phase of the general elections. Participants also awaited key earnings and macro data due Friday, they added.

    Over 46% turnout in Jammu & Kashmir till 3 p.m., polling peaceful

    Over 46 per cent voting was recorded in Jammu and Kashmir's two Lok Sabha constituencies of Jammu and Baramulla till 3 p.m. on Thursday during a generally peaceful poll process save an incident of stone-pelting that left a woman injured. "An overall voter turnout of 46.3 per cent was recorded in the two constituencies," an official said. The official said in the Jammu Lok Sabha seat, 58.7 per cent voters had exercised their franchise but in Baramulla, only 27.3 per cent voters turned out till 3 p.m. The poll process, especially in Baramulla constituency in the Kashmir Valley, remained generally peaceful except for a stray incident in Palhalan area of Baramulla district where a woman was injured when some youth pelted stones to disrupt the poll process.

    41.73 % voting till 3 pm in Bihar first phase

    Around 41.73 per cent votes were cast by 3 pm in the four Lok Sabha seats in Bihar where polling is on in the first phase on Thursday. As per the poll percentage figure released by the Bihar chief electoral officer, Gaya recorded the highest turnout at 44 per cent, followed by Nawada at 43 per cent, Jamui at 41.34 per cent and Aurangabad at 38.50 per cent. The voting percentage for Nawada assembly bypoll, which was also held during the day was 43 per cent.

    Kairana: BSF fires in air as people try to vote without ID cards

    BSF personnel fired in the air at a polling booth here on Thursday as some people, who were not carrying their identity cards, tried to forcibly enter the premises to cast their votes, police said. The incident took place at a polling booth in Rasoolpur Gujran village under Kandhla police station around 12 pm, they said. Some people, who had turned up without their identity cards, tried to enter the polling booth forcibly.     55.9% cast votes till 1 pm in West Bengal

    Around 55.9 per cent of voters exercised their franchise till 1 pm in two parliamentary constituencies in West Bengal on Thursday, an election official said. An estimated 55.44 per cent of voters cast their ballots in the Cooch Behar (SC) constituency, while 56.45 per cent polling was recorded in the Alipurduar (ST) seat, till 1 pm, a senior official of the Election Commission said. "Polling is taking place peacefully everywhere. We have not received any such complaints which could not be resolved," Additional Chief Electoral Officer Sanjay Basu said. A total of 34,51,883 electorate in the two constituencies will decide the fate of 18 candidates.
