NEW DELHI: Panic ensued at a hospital in Rohini on Friday after an armed gangster entered and tried to kill a rival gang member who was in police custody. However, the policemen escorting the criminal pinned down the shooter before he could open fire. The situation was soon brought under control and the shooter, Prasenjit Jha (23) alias Chikna, was arrested and booked for attempt to murder.
Sources said the policemen got some time to respond as the shooter’s pistol got jammed.
Jha works for jailed gangster Sunil Maan alias Tillu. The target, Karambir Kaju, is a gang member of Delhi’s most wanted gangster, Jitender Gogi.
The high-voltage drama unfolded at Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital around 1pm. Kaju had been arrested by Haryana’s CIA unit in another case and cops from K N Katju police station in Rohini had obtained his remand on April 9 in connection with the murder of a restaurant owner, Anil Maan, in January.
Maan had been shot 22 times near his restaurant in Sector 17, Rohini on January 4 by Kaju and three others. On Friday, Kaju was brought to the hospital for medical examination. He was accompanied by a team led by inspector Rajender Khatri, ASI Pratap Vikram and three other policemen.
When Jha reached there and pointed the pistol at Kaju, the five cops pounced on him and snatched the gun from his hand. The shooter tried to snatch a policeman’s service pistol, but was overpowered. A sub-inspector and constable got injured in the incident. The pistol with six live rounds was seized from Jha, a resident of Sagarpur. He was earlier involved in another attempt to murder case for shooting at a rival in Paharganj.

“The incident has its roots in the gang war between Gogi and Tillu gangs. Anil Maan was the brother of a criminal named Pravesh Maan who was close to Tillu. Gogi’s aide, Surya Prakash alias Bablu Khera, had got Anil killed through Karambir. Tillu sent Jha on Friday to avenge that murder,” a source said.
The rivalry between the two gangs has consumed over a dozen lives in the last two years. Last year, four people, including a woman passing by the area, had been killed in a shootout between the two gangs in north Delhi’s Burari.
