Rohtas SP accuses Sasaram DSP of armchair supervision

Rohtas SP accuses Sasaram DSP of armchair supervision
SASARAM: In a case of alleged armchair investigation, four youths remained in jail for months together on the gang-rape charge levelled by a 17-year-old girl and her mother through two separate FIRs lodged with Town police station at Sasaram and Women’s police station in Rohtas district in February last year. Two of them, however, got bail from the Patna high court after a few months, the other two are still behind bars.

However, when DIG (Shahabad) Rakesh Kumar Rathi ordered Rohtas SP Satyaveer Singh to review the two FIRs, it was found that one of the accused was already in the police lock-up in a case when the crime was allegedly committed on the minor girl.
The SP, in his report to the DIG, said the Sasaram DSP had completed only “khanapurti” (formalities) in the name of supervising the case as a result of which the four youths were jailed. “I have directed the investigation officers (IOs) concerned to file closure reports in the court in connection with the two cases,” the SP told this reporter on Saturday. He has also directed the Town police station to lodge an FIR against the mother-daughter duo for registering false cases, Singh said.
Sources said show-cause notices have also been issued to the IOs that why action should not be taken against them for their gross negligence in the cases.
According to sources, the girl first lodged an FIR with the Town police station on February 4, 2018 and accused Md Tabrez Alam, Ankit Kumar and Sonu Alam of Takiya under the Model police station area of gang rape. She alleged that Tabrez offered her lift on his motorcycle when she was on way to her ‘mausi’ (mother’s sister) house on February 3, 2018. However, he took her to a lonely place near Amara Talab where she was offered sedative-laced water. As she fell unconscious, the three gang-raped her on February 3-4 night. She managed to escape from their clutches in the name of answering the call of nature the next morning, she alleged.

On February 4, the girl’s mother, Shanti Devi, lodged another FIR with the Mahila police station at Dehri-on-Sone, alleging that her daughter was gang-raped by Sharab Sai and Yunus Sai of Takiya under the Town police station at Sasaram. She alleged that the two accused were Tabrez’s relatives and raped the girl at gunpoint to mount pressure on the family to settle the old case. The police, allegedly without any inquiry, arrested the Sai duo the same day and sent them to jail. They are still languishing in jail.
But during investigation, IO P K Pandey came to know that Tabrez had already been detained at the Model police station since 8pm on February 3, 2018 on a written complaint by the girl’s parents that he had kidnapped her. Tabrez was forwarded to jail on February 5. Sonu surrendered before the court after a week. Ankit was still at large.
Sources said Sasaram DSP supervised the case and found the accusation against the three accused in the first FIR true. Agreeing with the DSP’s findings, the SP directed the IO to submit chargesheet against them on April 28 last year. However, the Patna high court granted bail to Tabrez on July 10 and to Sonu on November 6 last year.
