PUNE: At least four locations in Vidarbha have been sizzling for the past couple of days, with mercury touching 45°C in Chandrapur on Sunday — the second highest summer temperature in the country this season after Khargone (in Madhya Pradesh).
Akola, Amravati and Bramhapuri were not far behind. They recorded a day temperature of over 44°C on Sunday.

At least eight locations in the state — mostly from Vidarbha, including these four, and Nagpur, Wardha and Parbhani — were among the hottest locations in the country on Sunday.
The temperature dipped to some extent at these locations on Monday because of the scattered rainfall in parts of the state.
Last April, the temperature in Chandrapur had gone up to as high as 46.8°C, but that was around the month-end. Till 2010, its highest April day temperature was 46.4° in 2009.
Chandrapur on Monday witnessed a slightly lower temperature at 44.8°C. However, the temperatures on Sunday and Monday were just over a degree away from the extreme temperature recorded there last year.
Met officials stated that heat wave conditions were observed on Sunday at isolated pockets over Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha, where the maximum temperature had been appreciably above normal by 3.1°C to 5°C.

Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune, told TOI that Chandrapur recently recorded the second highest day temperature in the country for the entire summer season up till now after Khargone, where the maximum temperature had surged to a sizzling 45.5°C.
“Chandrapur, areas of Vidarbha and adjacent areas in MP are currently recording very high temperature as they are approaching the peak summer season. Maximum temperature here was around 3.5 degrees above normal on Sunday and Monday. All the stations in Vidarbha were recording high positive departures in day temperature till Sunday, but the rain at scattered places in the region brought the temperature down slightly,” said Kashyapi.
He said there wasn’t any specific system to bring about a change in Vidarbha’s temperature till Sunday. “With the day temperature peaking here, a trough line (extended low pressure area) has formed. The system will trap moisture and may result in partly to mainly cloudy conditions, followed by light rain in isolated to scattered places,” said Kashyapi.
The high temperature worsened the water situation in the region. The Totladoh dam has just 3% live storage, which is lower than last year as well as the average of the past 10 years, as per data from the Central Water Commission (CWC).
A CWC report for the week ending April 11 showed that upper Wardha dam in the Amravati region in Vidarbha currently had 20% live storage.
