KOLKATA: A CPM worker at Patharpratima in South 24 Parganas was found lying dead near a water body in Lakshmi Narayanpur on Tuesday morning. While police have sent the dead body for postmortem, CPM leaders claimed that he was murdered. The victim - Ajay Mandal (45) - was an active member of the CPM and had been a Left Front candidate from the area in the last panchayat polls.
According to local CPM leaders, Mandal had gone out on Tuesday night and did not return.
On Wednesday morning, his body was found lying near a water body in Lakshmi Narayanpur area. "There were deep cuts on his mouth and marks of injury on his body. We suspect that he was beaten up and murdered,” CPM leader Shamik Lahiri said. Mandal, an influential leader in the area, had earlier been kidnapped during the panchayat polls, Lahiri alleged. CPM leaders started an agitation in front of the Patharpratima police station.
Abhijit Das, South 24 Parganas' BJP president said that their workers are being beaten up on a regular basis. “Atrocities have begun after the poll dates were announced. Our workers are being threatened and intimidated. Shyamaprasad Haldar, our candidate in Lok Sabha from Mathurapur constituency was attacked a few days back,” he said.
Tathagata Basu, SP Sunderban on Wednesday said, “We have not yet received any complaint for murder or unnatural death as yet. The person was a fisherman by profession and could have also gone for fishing in the area. We are sending the dead body for autopsy."
