NEW DELHI: An Indian crested porcupine was rescued on Tuesday night after it was hit by a vehicle on Jawaharlal Nehru University campus.
According to NGO Wildlife SOS, heavy showers on Tuesday caused a power cut on the campus, which led to the accident. The animal sustained injuries on the hind limbs and is currently kept under observation.
At 10pm, the NGO team received a call from a student, informing them about an injured porcupine hit by a vehicle.

“When the Wildlife SOS rescuers arrived, they found the animal in a semi-conscious state. After implementing all the safety protocols, the porcupine was carefully transferred into a transport carrier and will be released into the wild once affirmed fit,” an NGO official said.
The Indian crested porcupine (Hystrix indica) or the Indian porcupine is a large species of hystricomorph rodent and is native to southern Asia and the Middle East. Porcupines mainly consume roots, bulbs, fruits, grains as well as insects and small vertebrates.
The student, who stays at the Brahmaputra hostel and had made the call, said, “The accident took place while I was returning to my hostel from the library. Because of the rain and thunderstorm, there no power on the campus and I had to take a closer look to see if the porcupine was injured. My friends and I kept a close eye till the rescue team arrived.”
