In the first incident of such hanging in Purulia, a note was found with the body of Trilochan Mahato.
Political violence that rocked West Bengal during its Panchayat election in 2018 revisited Purulia on Wednesday. Sishupal Sahis, a 22-year-old BJP yuva morcha worker was found hanging from a tree near his village at Arsa. Ten months ago, on May 31, Purulia witnessed similar scene when 18-year-old Trilochan Mahato was found hanging from a tree outside his village in Balarampur.

This was followed by another such incident on June 2, when 32-year-old Dulal Kumar’s body was also found hanging from a high voltage electric tower in Purulia, a recent stronghold of BJP. The common thread between these three instances is all of the victims were members of BJP.

Sahis, an active member of BJP’s youth wing went missing last night, confirmed the district SP, Aakash Megharia. “The youth’s body was found hanging from a tree this morning. We removed the body and sent it for an autopsy. An unnatural death case was started till the post mortem is received.”

Sishupal was the youngest son of Jadav Sahis, BJP’s elected panchayat functionary in Sirkabandh gram panchayat. BJP won in this panchayat last year. The family suspects that their son was murdered by the goons of Trinamool Congress as the victim was an active worker of Bharatiya Yuva Morcha. “My son had been writing all the wall graffiti for BJP over last two weeks. On Tuesday, he wrote on the walls till late evening. After that, he went to attend a local fair and from there he went missing. His phone went off at 8 pm. We found his body at the wee hours today,” said his father.

BJP’s district president Vidyasagar Chakrabarti alleged that Mahato was murdered and hanged. “The victim was an active worker of the Bharatiya Yuva Morcha. The night before he died he was seen writing graffiti for BJP party for the elections. In the night he was reported missing. His body was found today. This is sixth such murder in the district. No sane person will believe that the members of BJP in Purulia started committing suicide by hanging. All these three cases of hanging are murders. They are trying to exhibit such killings in this cruel and brutal way to intimidate others. We will lodge a murder complaint with police and with the Election Commission,” he said.

Magaharia, SP, Purulia however said that he was yet to receive a murder complaint from the family. According to police sources, prima facie reports of the post mortem suggested that it was a case of ‘suicidal hanging’ and ‘no injury mark or ligature mark was found’. However, the final report is yet to come, added the source. Shantiram Mahato,TMC district president brushed aside the allegations saying the BJP was trying to malign the TMC. “We have asked the police to carry out an impartial investigation. We do not believe in the politics of murder. “

In the first incident of such hanging in Purulia, a note was found with the body of Trilochan Mahato. “You deserve to die for doing politics and working for BJP at this young age” was written on the white T-shirt that he was wearing, the police said.
