Of the six Assembly segments in the Coimbatore Parliamentary constituency, three constituencies that are predominantly rural in nature polled more than the other three.
Statistics obtained from the office of the District Election Officer and Collector indicate that Sulur Assembly topped the table polling 72.43%, followed by Palladam at 66.69% and Kavundampalayam at 64.60%.
The polling percentage in the other three Assembly segments that have more urban areas – Coimbatore North, Coimbatore South and Singanallur – were 58.91, 60.28 and 64 respectively, bringing down the over-all polling percentage in the Parliamentary constituency to 64.
This at least 4.26 percentage points less than the 2014 Parliamentary election.
Assembly-segment wise the 2019 polling percentage is less than the 2016 Assembly election as well. In the Assembly election Palladam recorded 71.68%, Sulur 75.60%, Kavundampalayam 66.42%, Coimbatore North 62.06%, Coimbatore South 62.59% and Singanallur 61.85%
The Assembly segment that recorded the lowest polling percent in this election is Coimbatore North.
Interestingly, in all the Assembly segments more men turned out to vote. The biggest difference in voting percentage between the two genders is in the Sulur Assembly segment – 6.54%. This happened though the number of women voters is higher than men – the Parliamentary constituency has 9.80 lakh women voters and 9.78 lakh men voters.
The statistics also show that after the initial rush to vote in the first two hours – till 9 a.m., the turn out for the next four hours was very poor, except in Coimbatore North where the maximum turnout was recorded between 11 a.m. And 1 p.m. - 14.92%.
The rural parts of the Parliamentary constituency – Palladam, Sulur and Kavundampalayam – saw maximum turn out between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. In the two hours between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., the turn out in Sulur Assembly segment was as high as 23.6%. The lowest turnout happened in the two hours after 3 p.m. and even the last hour polling did not witness as high a turnout as the initial two hours.
