Eight passengers were injured after 12 bogies of the Howrah-New Delhi Poorva Express train derailed in Kanpur early on Saturday. The incident occurred near Rooma railway station when the 14-coach train with 900 passengers was on its way to New Delhi.
Twelve bogies, including two sleeper coaches and eight AC coaches, partially or completely overturned, said Amit Malviya, North Central Railway Public Relations Officer.
Six people suffered minor injuries, while the other two had grievous injuries and were admitted to Hallet Hospital in Kanpur, said a railways spokesperson.
The rest of the passengers were sent to their destination in a special train, said Malviya.
The railways has given Rs 25,000 each to the two seriously injured passengers, and Rs 5,000 each to those with minor injuries, said the spokesperson.
Meanwhile, the derailment affected other trains. As many as 31 trains were diverted and 13 others cancelled, he said.
