3rd phase: High-voltage campaign ends
PATNA: Campaigning for the third phase of Lok Sabha election in Jhanjharpur, Supaul, Araria, Madhepura and Khagaria ended on Sunday evening. Additional chief electoral officer Sanjay Kumar Singh said altogether 82 candidates are in the fray in the third phase of polls to be held on April 23.
There are 17 candidates in Jhanjharpur, 12 in Araria, 20 each in Supaul and Khagaria and 13 in Madhepura.
Voting will be held at 9,076 booths across the five constituencies. There are altogether 98,09,263 electors in the five constituencies, including 46,55,306 males, 42,44284 females and 222 belonging to third gender, Singh said. Polling will be held between 7am and 6pm in all constituencies, except in the Simri Bakhtiyarpur, Alouli and Beldaur three assembly segments of Khagaria where people would voting will conclude at 4pm as the areas fall in the riverine belt.
Singh said around 58,700 personnel will be on duty in the third phase and webcasting will be done at 162 places. Mounted military police (MMP) and police personnel will patrol the riverine area. From safety point of view, one helicopter each in Purnia and Saharsa and an air-ambulance in Patna will be stationed for any emergency.
While chief minister Nitish Kumar ended his campaign for the third phase on Sunday by addressing an election rally at Khagaria in favour of LJP candidate and sitting MP Choudhary Mehboob Ali Kaiser, RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav sought votes at Phulparas in Jhanjharpur for party candidate Gulab Yadav. JD(U)’s Rampreet Mandal and Dinesh Chandra Yadav are contesting from Jhanjharpur and Madhepura respectively. Madhepura MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, who is contesting this time as Jan Adhikar Party candidate, fell sick while campaigning on the last day.
Newly formed Vikassheel Insan party chief Mukesh Sahni, popularly known as the ‘Son of Mallah’ is contesting Lok Sabha election for the first time. He is facing Kaiser.
Both PM Modi and Rahul were in Bihar on Saturday to campaign for the third phase. While PM was at Forbesganj in Araira for BJP’s Pradeep Singh, Rahul sought votes for Supaul MP Ranjeet Ranjan.
