NEW DELHI: In a bid to promote cycling in the city, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has introduced permanent space for bicycle stands at metro stations that have provisions for dedicated parking lots. DMRC is also introducing cycle sharing at many of its newly-opened stations.
"This initiative has been taken with a view to encourage use of bicycles and propagate environment friendly mode of transportation among metro commuters for covering smaller distances," a DMRC spokesperson said.

"At present, this facility is available at 18 parking lots at different stations across the Delhi Metro network," he added.
The stations where permanent space for bicycle stands has been provided are Seelampur, Shahdara, Welcome, Rithala, Saket, Arjangarh, Chattarpur, Dwarka Mor, Dwarka, Dwarka Sector 21, Mundka, Nangloi, Peeragarhi, Tughlaqabad, Badarpur, Sarita Vihar and Okhla Bird Sanctuary.
"The parking lots at Nawada, Uttam Nagar (East) and Vishwavidyalaya metro stations have also been identified for permanent bicycle stands that will be installed within the next few days," the spokesperson said. "This facility will be further extended to more stations in a phased manner," he added.
These permanent bicycle stands have the capacity for parking of multiple bicycles and will be provided with a locking mechanism for the safety of bicycles.
"DMRC, in association with some private operators, is already operating 20 bicycle sharing service stands (through operators) covering 19 stations across its network. With the recent expansion of the metro network, 13 more stations have been identified for the bicycle sharing service, which will be functional in a few weeks," he said. DMRC encourages use of bicycles by commuters as it is an eco-friendly mode of transport, the spokesman said.
