Companies linked to 9 oil tankers face U.S. sanctions' penalties, authorities say

U.S. sanctions affect tankers on Venezuela-Cuba oil deliveries

The Fleet Mon service shared this Varjag photo of the 18-year-old New Hellas oil tanker built in South Korea and owned by a Greek company.

MIAMI ā€“ Crude oil tankerĀ New HellasĀ has sailed from theĀ Petroleos de Venezuela SA, orĀ PDVSA, refinery in Amuay, to Cuban ports in Matanzas and Havana before. Those are the type of voyages President Donald Trump's administration wants to stop.

On Wednesday morning, the tanker departed out of Willemstad, CuraƧao, a Dutch Caribbean island, and stopped moving north of Amuay, Venezuela, and east of Aruba afterĀ a status change that afternoon, according to services to track fleets such asĀ My Ship TrackingĀ and Marine Traffic.Ā

The change was five days after the U.S. State Department released a statement from Treasury Secretary Steven T. MnuchinĀ warning the companies that are using oil tankers to deliverĀ Venezuelan oil to Cuba .Ā

"They are profiting while the Maduro regime pillages natural resources. Venezuelaā€™s oil belongs to the Venezuelan people, and should not be used as a bargaining tool to prop up dictators,"Ā Mnuchin said.Ā

U.S. authorities say the 18-year-old New HellasĀ tanker, which sails under the flag of Greece, is linked to Lima Shipping, a corporation based out of Monrovia, Liberia, and it is one of theĀ nine tankers that have beenĀ violating U.S. sanctions.

The other eight tankers areĀ Silver Point,Ā FSO Alba Marina,Ā Gold Point, Ice Point,Ā Indian Point,Ā Nedas,Ā S-TrotterĀ and Iron Point, according to the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

Aside from Lima Shipping, there are three other companies facingĀ sanctions over alleged links to the tankers. PB Tankers S.P.A., which is linked to six of the tankers, is based out of Palermo, Italy.Ā The two others are based out of Monrovia, Liberia:Ā Jennifer Navigation Ltd. is allegedly linked toĀ Nedas,Ā andĀ Large Range Limited is linked toĀ S-Trotter.

FSO Alba MarinaĀ andĀ Ice PointĀ sail withĀ Italian flags.Ā Gold Point,Ā Indian Point,Ā Iron PointĀ andĀ Silver PointĀ sail withĀ Malta flags.Ā NedasĀ sails withĀ aĀ Greek flagĀ andĀ S-TrotterĀ with a Panama flag.Ā According to Marine Traffic, Silver Point was last in Cienfuegos, Cuba, April 16;Ā S-Trotter was last in Matanzas, Cuba, April 20.

As a result of the alleged violations, U.S. authorities canĀ blockĀ the companies' assetsĀ in the U.S. John Bolton, a national security adviser to Trump, said last week the sanctions are part of a new U.S. policy that is designed to pressure the leaders of Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua to give up power.

"Maduro relies on the support he receives from the Cuban military and intelligence services to retain his hold on power,"Ā Mnuchin said.
