BEGUSARAI: Chief minister Nitish Kumar on Monday sought votes for firebrand BJP leader and Union minister Giriraj Singh, who is contesting the Lok Sabha election from Begusarai against former JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar of CPI.
Nitish appealed to voters to support Giriraj at an election meeting at Bakhri. Giriraj was also present. Without naming Kanhaiya, Nitish reminded people that some people can speak well “but we work hard for development”.
Relations between Nitish and Giriraj were not cordial earlier as the CM had questioned the integrity of the BJP leader following recovery of huge amount of cash, including foreign currency and jewellery, from his flat in July 2014.

Nitish, who had resigned from CM’s post after his party’s drubbing in the 2014 Lok Sabha election, had even demanded disqualification of Giriraj’s membership from the Parliament. Giriraj was also a vocal critic of Nitish. He would never miss an opportunity to slam Nitish after the latter quit the NDA following projection of Narendra Modi as the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate in the 2014 Lok Sabha election.
However, Giriraj, who was initially unwilling to contest from Begusarai, had made a courtesy call to the CM’s house after agreeing to contest from the seat and sought his active support.
Giriraj is locked in a fierce triangular contest with CPI nominee Kanhaiya Kumar and RJD’s Tanveer Hassan, who is fighting as a Grand Alliance candidate. Begusarai will go to the polls in the fourth phase on April 29.
