DPCC stays sealing of factories in Narela, Bawana
New Delhi: In a big relief to 800 factory owners in Narela and Bawana, Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) on Tuesday withheld from sealing factories violating environment norms on the direction of Delhi government.
A team of DPCC, district magistrate and corporation officials reached Bawana Industrial area for sealing around 677 industries found to be discharging solid waste and industrial effluent into stormwater drains.
However, before the action could start, Delhi government’s environment department issued an order to DPCC to postpone it.
A senior government official, on condition of anonymity, said, “DPCC has been asked to avoid taking coercive action and prepare a short-term plan to understand the root cause of pollution and finding sustainable solutions along with the factory owners. In the letter, it has been clearly mentioned that punitive action should be taken, but snatching traders’ livelihood by sealing shops is not a solution,” he said.
Earlier, in the circular issued to the traders on April 3 by DPCC and accessed by TOI, it is mentioned that DSIIDC had carried out inspection of industries in Bawana in December and March.
Members of Bawana Factories Welfare Association (BFWA), however, claimed that after issuing of notices by DPCC in December and March, they had arranged for proper disposal of waste water and factory effluents.
Rajan Lamba, president, BFWA, said all the precautionary steps were taken by the factory owners. “Still we were served the closure notices in the beginning of April. The other agencies were also asked to discontinue our electricity and water supply. This led to panic in the area and we approached the environment minister and managed to meet him on Tuesday morning.”
Simranpreet Singh, a member of the association, informed that DPCC had served notices to 677 factories in Bawana and 112 in Narela making plastic and engineering items.
