Raichur murder: CID to get custody of accused in day or two

BENGALURU: Sleuths from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probing the rape and murder of a 21-year-old engineering student in Raichur will get the custody of Sudarshan Yadav, the accused, in a day or two, sources said.
The decomposed body of the girl, who was a VI semester engineering student at Navodaya College, was found hanging from a tree in a farm on the outskirts of Raichur on April 16. She had gone missing on April 13 after she left home for college.Late that night, the girl’s parents visited Netajinagar police station, requesting cops to register a missing person’s case. However, police sent them back without accepting the complaint.
When the body was recovered on April 16, a suicide note written in Kannada was found nearby, which said the girl took the extreme step owing to academic failure.
By April 18, the picture of the girl’s body hanging from the tree went viral on social media, kicking off an online campaign seeking justice. The same day, her mother approached the police station and this time, cops registered the case and booked Yadav, from Raichur, under sections 376 (rape) and 302 (murder) of IPC.
The girl’s mother accused Sudarshan, who is currently in judicial custody, of stalking her daughter. “On April 13, he was seen near our house. My husband was searching for our daughter in the evening and came across Sudarshan. On being questioned, Sudarshan replied that he would bring back our girl. He kidnapped my daughter between April 13 and April 15, and raped and murdered her,” her statement read.
Cops await autopsy report
Asked about apathy of local police, a senior CID officer said, “Definitely, there was a delay in registering the case. Had cops accepted the complaint on the night of April 13 itself, the girl would have lived. We are waiting for the postmortem report, which may arrive by the weekend. Based on its findings, we will continue the investigation. Also, we will look into the apathy of Netajinagar police and prepare a report,” the senior cop said.
