    KeyArena's replacement is set to start hosting NHL games in the fall of next year.   6. Annual Denny Lecture: Seattle’s High-Tech Housewives with Dr. Amy Bhatt
    Drawing on her book High-Tech Housewives: Indian IT Workers, Gendered Labor and Transmigration, Amy Bhatt will provide a look into the lives of IT temps in India who provide a lot of labor to tech behemoths like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft.

  7. Artist Talk: Louie Palu
    Hear a talk by environment-/social justice-focused photographer and Guggenheim Fellow Louie Palu, whose works include a book of photos documenting the effects of industrial toxins (A Field Manual to Asbestos) and the work-in-progress Distant Early Warning, about military activity in the Arctic.

  8. Going to Extremes: Is It Climate Change or Just Bad Weather?
    Get some insight into increasingly common extreme weather events and their relationship to climate change, courtesy of a panel that includes James Rufo-Hill of Seattle Public Utilities, Sarah Ragen of the UW Dept of Oceanography, Joe Zagrodnik of the UW Department of Atmospheric Sciences, and Brittany Hoedemaker of the US School of Marine and Fishery Sciences.

  9. Joe Gaydos: The Salish Sea
    Science Director at the SeaDoc Society Joe Gaydos will share his knowledge (and photographs) of the 3,000 vertebrate and invertebrate species in the Salish Sea.

  10. Lawney Reyes: The Horse Nation
    Learn about the history of Native American horsemanship and relay racing, which has its roots in the early 17th century. While forced relocations to reservations diminished the tradition, Native American horse racing eventually enjoyed a resurgence, and today is popular in the Northwest.

  11. Poets Spring Forth
    More than 20 local poets will read from their oeuvre—Michele Bombardier, Kevin Craft, Laura Da', Paul Nelson, Sierra Nelson, and Carolyne Wright among them.

  12. The Why, How, Where and What of Earthquake Early Warning
    Learn how earthquake early warning (EEW) systems work, how even seconds of advance warning can save lives, and when we can get one in the PNW from the Seismological Society of America. Panelists will include Seattle Times science reporter Sandi Doughton (author of Full-Rip 9.0: The Next Big Earthquake in the Pacific Northwest), Scott Miles of UW's Department of Human Centered Design and Engineering, Harold Tobin of UW's Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, and ShakeAlert program engineer Rachel Lanigan. Douglas Toomey, director of the University of Oregon’s branch of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, will moderate.

  19. A Doll's House, Part 2
    Nora, in Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House, is arguably one of the most famous female roles in 19th-century theater. Every leading ingenue has had her turn playing the "little lark"—even Seattle's Cherdonna Shinatra recently took on the role. But the ending of the play is famously up for interpretation, and Tony Award nominee Lucas Hnath's cheekily titled A Doll's House, Part 2 takes on the challenge of picking up where Ibsen left off. It's funny, smart, and maybe the best old play to come out of the 2010s. CHASE BURNS

Riley Snorton of the University of Chicago and Dr. Aliyyah Abdur-Raman of Brown University, will discuss how black queers survive and thrive despite the "perpetual state of emergency" engendered by politics and prejudice. Snorton's talk is called "Blackness, Historicity, and the Temporality of Invention" and is based on his book Black on Both Sides: A Racial History of Trans Identity, while Abdur-Rahman's "Black Presentism and the Practice of Ecstasy" draws on her new project Millennial style.

  45. Melissa Kwasny: Putting on the Dog
    Poet/essayists Kwasny's book Putting on the Dog: The Animal Origins of What We Wear ranges all over the globe to investigate the animals that humans use for clothing—"leather, wool, silk, feathers, pearls, and fur"—and the industries that they create.

    Bill Griffith's meticulously researched graphic work illustrates the life of Schlitzie the Pinhead, a man who spent his life as a sideshow performer and even appeared in Tod Browning's horror film Freaks. According to press materials, this biography provides "a unique look into his world and restor[es] dignity to his life by recognizing his contributions to popular culture."

  66. Decolonizing Allure: Women Artists of Color in Conversation
    Georges Bizet's Carmen, soon to be staged by Seattle Opera, boasts gorgeous music and a suspenseful, tragic story, but it also follows the common Western-canon pattern of casting a woman of color (in Carmen's case, Roma) as an exotic vixen. This panel, organized by the opera, will discuss some important questions: "Is [Carmen] a dangerous seductress, a feminist martyr, or a complex Roma woman making her way in the world as an outsider? Or perhaps Carmen is merely a stereotype that reflects the fragilities and insecurities of the society that created her." In either case, how do women artists of color respond? Hear from excellent director and actor Sara Porkalob, Dr. Naomi André University of Michigan, who wrote Black Opera: History, Power, Engagement, and UW's Dr. Michelle Habell-Pallán, author of Loca Motion: The Travels of Chicana and Latina Popular Culture.

  67. Steamships and Sternwheelers on the S.S. Virginia V
    The Atlas Obscura Society Seattle will present a talk by historian Ed Brown on the Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet, which "moved people, mail, livestock, and other goods between over 300 waterfront landings from the mid-1800s through the Second World War." Better yet, the talk will take place on a historic steamship, and Brown will have plenty of stories and historic photos to share.
