The Police Special Response Unit divers have temporarily suspended their operations in the search for a vehicle that is believed to be submerged in the Rewa River.

A statement from the Fiji Police Media Cell said the team made one attempt but due to the strong currents and poor visibility the search turned out negative.

“The strong current is also impacting the search efforts and a decision has been made to temporarily call off any dive expeditions for the safety of the officers.”

18-year-old Tasleem Ali allegedly lost control of the vehicle he was driving along Baulevu Road at around 8.20am yesterday.

It plunged into the Rewa River.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said initial reports stated four people were in the vehicle, but they have to sight the vehicle before confirming this.
