Maharashtra: Two girls drown, one rescued in Palghar district
MUMBAI: Two of the three teenage friends who went swimming in a river under Wada taluka in Maharashtra's Palghar district drowned on Wednesday. One of them was rescued.
Mansi Desale (11), her friend Disha Aakre (11) and Disha’s sister Vedika (13) had gone for a swim to a river in their Bilghar village of Wada in the afternoon.
The girls decided to spend sometime in the water to beat the heat.
As the girls who knew swimming ventured a little deep into the river they misjudged the water level and began drowning.
Their screams alerted villagers who tried to rescue them. Mansi died of drowning on the spot while Vedika was declared dead after admission to the hospital. Disha was rescued and is being treated at a private hospital.
The Wada police registered a case of accidental death. Police said that the girls knew swimming but had no idea about the depth of the river.
