CRACKING DOWN: Police stopped the agitators from entering the DC’s office. Thousands protested seeking justice for the girl
KALABURAGI/BALLARI: Timely intervention by police stopped a huge protest from turning violent in Raichur on Thursday.
Thousands of students were protesting near the deputy commissioner’s office seeking action against culprits involved in the alleged rape and murder of an engineering student reported recently. The girl’s body was found hanging on a hillock on the outskirts of Raichur.
When police stopped the agitators from entering the DC’s office by closing its gate, the latter threw water packets, slippers and stones towards the office.
One of the stones fell on the district president of Vishwakarma community, Guru Vishwakarma, injuring him. The protesters were reportedly trying to enter the office to submit a memorandum.
The rally seeking justice for the 21-year-old student started at Manikprabhu Temple. The protesters comprised women from Jain and minority communities, students and members of AIDSO, SFI, AIDYO, ABVP and Youth Congress. Kannada actors Harshika and Bhuvan, who were also part of the rally, demanded a fair investigation.
When a leader of the community — to which the girl belonged — tried to immolate himself, police stopped him from doing so and rushed him to hospital. The agitators later demanded the DC come to the protest venue and receive the memorandum. When the situation was about to go out of control, Raichur DC Sharath B heeded the demand. Police took one person into custody for stone-pelting.
In Ballari, District Viswakarma Vikas Vedike held a peaceful protest, condemning the student’s death.

2 cops suspended for refusing to file case
Police sub-inspector Mariyamma and constable (writer) Anjaneya, both attached to the Raichur women’s police station, have been suspended for allegedly not registering the girl’s death case initially.

“The accused has been questioned about his relationship with the girl. Her mother had complained that Yadav was harassing and stalking her for a long time, forcing her to skip college. On April 13, the day she went missing, Yadav was seen near her house,” sources said.
