TMC, BJP workers clash in Birbhum
Suri: Trinamool Congress and BJP supporters clashed at Birbhum’s Ilambazar on Saturday, two days before two Lok Sabha constituencies in the district — Bolpur and Birbhum — go to polls. Special police observer Vivek Dubey will reach Birbhum on Sunday to take stock.
The trouble began in the morning, when a Trinamool rally was passing a BJP party office. Residents said some participants barged in and ransacked it.
After lodging a police complaint, BJP district president Ramkrishna Roy claimed they had broken the furniture. A police conti-ngent later reached the spot.
The violence, preceded by clashes at Sainthia and Panrui in the last two days, has scared voters, though the district returning officer has earmarked only 709 (33%) of the 2,097 polling premises as “sensitive”. These are spread over possible flashpoints where BJP has gained ground in the last three years.
Late on Saturday evening, clashes erupted between TMC and BJP in Chhatra village, on the outskirts of Suri. A huge police contingent was sent to the spot.
