BENGALURU: Five persons, including a 14-year-old boy, drowned in a pond near a mosque at Siddarabetta, 100km from Bengaluru, on Saturday afternoon. They were on a family picnic when the tragedy occurred.
The deceased are Muneeer Khan, 49, Reshma Banu, 22, Usman Khan, 14, Yarab Khan, 21 and Mubeen Taj, 19 – all residents of Hegdenagar near Thanisandra. Muneer and Yarab were auto drivers.
Six members of the family had visited the dargah near Siddarabetta, a hill near Madhugiri in Tumakuru district.
After offering prayers, they decided to have lunch at the nearby tank.
“Usman finished his meal first and went to the tank to wash his hands. However, he slipped and fell into it. His uncle Muneer rushed to the tank to pull him out, but ended up falling himself. Yarab followed them, but he too drowned. Seeing the men fall, Reshma and Mubeen rushed to their rescue only to meet a watery grave,” police said.
The lone survivor is Usman’s mother Shakeela Haji Zaan. Shakeela raised an alarm, but not many people were around to respond. By the time locals arrived at the spot, all five of the family members had drowned, police added.
