Masked robber takes off with ₹ 2 crore worth jewellery, cash from Coimbatore finance firm

A man assaulted two women employees, before stealing 812 sovereign of jewellery, worth nearly ₹ 2 crore, and ₹ 1 lakh cash at the Muthoottu Mini Financiers branch

An unidentified man allegedly stole around 800 sovereign of jewellery and cash from the Ramanathapuram branch of Muthoottu Mini Financiers Limited here after assaulting two women employees on Saturday afternoon, claimed a complaint filed by the private finance firm management to the police.

The branch management has complained that 812 sovereign of jewellery, worth nearly ₹ 2 crore pledged by customers, and ₹ 1 lakh were stolen by a man aged nearly 30, at the Muthoottu Mini branch around 3.15 p.m. on Saturday.

Coimbatore City Police have formed four special teams to nab the man.

As per the complaint given to the police, the burglar came to the branch located on the first floor of a building at Ramanathapuram with his face covered using a handkerchief and a hat on his head.

Two employees - Divya and Renukadevi - were at the office. The man hit Divya, who was at the front office, before she fell unconscious on the floor. Renukadevi, who was in another cabin, came out hearing the cries of Divya. The burglar is said to have assaulted Renukadevi as well who fell unconscious too. The man managed to get the keys of lockers and took 812 sovereign of jewellery and ₹ 1 lakh. The women informed their regional manager about the incident when they regained consciousness.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) P. Perumal said the police were informed about the incident around 5 p.m. on Saturday. Senior police officers visited the scene of the crime while a scientific team was employed to get evidence.

“We have got a visual of the man from surveillance cameras in the building. The police are verifying the claims of the employees,” said Mr. Perumal.

The owner of a rice store on the ground floor of the building told media persons that he did not hear any noise from upstairs when the alleged burglary took place. Visuals from the surveillance camera at the rice store also showed the man going to the finance firm and leaving the place.
