PUNE: Parbhani in the Marathwada region and Akola in Vidarbha recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 47.2 degrees Celsius on Sunday. The temperature in Parbhani was 5.7 degrees C more than normal while that in Akola was 5.2 degrees C more.
Barring the coastal Konkan region, which includes Mumbai, the remaining parts of the state reeled under heat wave conditions.
Almost all districts in Vidarbha and Marathwada experienced day temperatures between 43 and 47 degrees C.
Mumbai’s Colaba station recorded 34.5 degrees C, which was 1.5 degrees C above normal, while Santacruz recorded 35.5 degrees Celsius, 2.3 degrees above normal.
Officials from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Pune said similar conditions will prevail at least till May 2. Thereafter, the heat wave will slowly reduce.
“The absence of a strong weather system over Maharashtra, less moisture incursion, lack of rain and greater heat absorption by the soil, besides the presence of a severe cyclonic storm off the Tamil Nadu and Sri Lankan coast, have led to the prevailing heat wave conditions,” Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather department, IMD, Pune, said.
Kashyapi said that currently there is a trough line (extended low pressure area) from South Chhattisgarh to South Madhya Maharashtra. “Because of this, there may be partly cloudy conditions during some afternoon hours in the southern parts of Maharashtra. This may result in some medium level clouds but the chances of rain is very less in Maharashtra, including Pune, in the coming days,” he said.
In Madhya Maharashtra, which stretches from Nashik up north and Kolhapur down south with Pune at the centre, the day temperatures were in the range of 42 to 44 degrees Celsius. The hill station Mahabaleshwar experienced a warmer day and night at 36.1 degrees C (4.4 degrees more) and 21.8 (2.9 degrees more) respectively. Areas in the Konkan region also recorded increased day temperatures.
