AURANGABAD: Unable to bear the shock of his wife’s death from cancer, a 60-year-old man hanged himself to death in the early hours of Sunday at Mukundwadi in the city. Bhausaheb Hiraman Gosawi’s wife Vimalbai (60), had passed away just hours earlier. The couple resided at Ramnagar.
Police said the man’s wife had died about 3 am. Bhausaheb did not wake up his son, who lived upstairs, to inform him of the death.
Instead, he used the phone to call his grandson in Paithan and inform him.
The grandson called home to talk of his grandmother, and that is when the man’s son came downstairs to check on his parents. He found his mother dead in bed, and saw that the main door was ajar. He stepped out and discovered the body of his father hanging by a saree from a tree in the compound.
Neighbours gathered soon and a message was passed to local police. The body was brought down and taken to hospital. An autopsy was performed at Government Medical College and Hospital.
Family sources said Bhausaheb was an influential union leader who was living in retirement.
He had served as secretary of Maharashtra General Kamgar Union and Association of Engineering Workers. Mukundwadi police registered a case of accidental death.
A medical officer at GMCH said with families becoming smaller and generations living apart, more and more people are falling into depression, which often goes undiagnosed.
