Career & Technical Education Signing Day for students
Culpeper County Public Schools will hold a special ceremony today to honor students in the Class of 2019 who are entering the military or starting their career.
Similar to signing days for college athletes, the CCPS Career & Technical Education Signing Day will give CTE student the opportunity to ink their intentions for the future. The event will take place in the Culpeper County Board of Supervisor Meeting Room, 302 N. Main St., starting at 4 p.m. with student and employer registration. The program will be held 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30.
About 30 students will be recognized, signing a letter of intent to mark their military enlistment or the beginning of their career. Culpeper KOVAR Drive for disabled Virginians happening now
Now through May 11, the Culpeper Knights of Columbus will be hosting its 42nd Annual Fundraising Drive for Virginians with Intellectual Disabilities.
Volunteers for KOVAR—Knights of Columbus Assisting Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities – will be wearing red and yellow aprons and will be stationed at major traffic points in Culpeper.
The most recent KOVAR grants were in the amounts of $20,000 for group home repairs, $9,334 to Remington Home Corporation for furniture, $11,466 to the Orange Group Home for flooring, furniture and appliances, $20,000 to Development Housing Corporation of Locust Grove for parking lot repair and carpeting and $21,777 to Culpeper County Schools for a kitchen and laundry facility for post high school education, according to a news release. KOVAR has distributed more 15 million dollars in Virginia since 1971.
KOVAR provides individuals with Intellectual Disabilities the means and opportunity for an independent, productive and fulfilling life to Virginians who otherwise might not be able to achieve their potential. Through grants to other nonprofit groups, a myriad of services such as repair, maintenance and furnishing group homes, career training, sending kids to camp, building playgrounds and granting loans for the purchase of group homes. In addition, KOVAR sponsors the Special Olympics each year with a $50,000 donation.
KOVAR is listed as one of America’s Best Charities. KOVAR is a nonprofit group and donations are 100 percent tax deductible with 98 percent of donations returned to the people in Virginia that need services.
This year’s Culpeper community KOVAR goal is $14,600. The Knights of Columbus is thankful for the community’s previous support and requests continued support for this year’s drive.
Spring Band Concerts
The Culpeper County Band program will present its 2019 Spring Concerts this Sunday, May 5 in the high schools.
At 2:00 pm, at the Culpeper County High School Auditorium, an elementary band composed of fifth grade students from Emerald Hill Elementary, Sycamore Park Elementary and Yowell Elementary Schools will perform. The Culpeper County Middle School Concert Band, under the direction of Mrs. Rebecca Roach, and the Culpeper County High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Duane Clore, will follow.
At 4:00 pm, at the Eastern View High School auditorium, an elementary band composed of fifth grade students from A. G. Richardson Elementary, Farmington Elementary and Pearl Sample Elementary Schools will perform. The Floyd T. Binns Concert Band, under the direction of Ms. Siobhan Dowen, and the Eastern View High School Concert Band, under the direction of Mr. Adam Roach, will follow.
The Band Boosters will have a bake sale at these concerts.Graduating senior band members will be recognized at the close of each concert.

Jewelry sale hospital fundraiser
Culpeper Medical Center Auxiliary will host a bead art jewelry sale 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Friday in the back hallway at the hospital, next to the Medical Staff Conference Room.
With designs by Laurel and Dana, the spring and summer collections will feature a large selection with styles for all tastes of custom pieces in pewter, sterling silver, 14K, freshwater pearls, lapis, shells, wood, crystals, quartz, jade, turquoise, black onyx and more. Proceeds will benefit the hospital.
Yard & Bake Sale
The Carver 4 County Museum will be sponsoring a Yard and Bake Sale 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday, May 4 at the Carver Center, 9432 James Madison Highway in Rapidan. The Museum will be open with Author Terry Miller signing books.
A Tribute to the Fallen and their Families
Culpeper National Cemetery will host a Tribute to the Fallen and Their Families at 9 a.m. on May 6 with the dedication of a plaque that will be permanently placed on cemetery grounds to ensure the sacrifice of veterans and their loved ones will never be forgotten.
The Department of Veterans Affairs and National Cemetery Administration are partnering with Carry the Load relay teams across the country to provide active ways to connect Americans to the sacrifices made by military service members and their families.
Three routes covering more than 11,500 miles will travel through 40 states and visit 26 National Cemeteries. These relay teams started marching April 25 and will end on May 26 in Dallas, Texas.
Upon arrival at Culpeper National Cemetery, the Cemetery Administration will dedicate the “Tribute to the Fallen and their Families” plaque. Following the 15-minute dedication ceremony, Carry the Load participants will continue their journey to the next destination along one of three designated routes.
