Paying tribute to the contribution and sacrifice of hundreds of people during the freedom struggle, the Congress on Tuesday re-enacted the famous salt satyagraha at Vedaranyam.

The re-enactment marked the 89th anniversary of the historical event. It was on this day 89 years ago that a group of Congress workers marched to Vedaranyam to protest the salt tax levied by the British.

To mark the historic event, a large number of Congress workers led by A. Gopanna, chairman, TNCC media cell, family members of Sardar Vedaratnam Pillai, P.V. Rajendran, former Member of Parliament, and G.K. Kanagaraj, president, Nagapattinam District (South) Congress Committee, took out a march from Vedarayam to Agasthiyampalli.

The participants, wearing Gandhi cap and carrying party flags, sang patriotic songs and hailed the sacrifice of freedom fighters during the seven-km trek. On reaching the Stupi, built in memory of the salt satyagraha, the Congress workers picked up a handful of salt just as the freedom fighters did.
