Cyclone Fani: IMD issues 'yellow warning' for Odisha coast

Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary L.V. Subrahmanyam, on Tuesday, discussed the likely impact of the Fani through video conference with chief secretaries of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Odisha and West Bengal.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a "yellow warning" for Odisha coast. It has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at places such as Sambalpur, Boudh, Kalahandi, Deogarh and Sundargarh.

“Cyclonic storm Fani is very likely to intensify further into an extremely severe cyclonic storm during next 12 hours. It is very likely to move northwestwards till 01st May evening and thereafter recurve north-northeastwards and cross Odisha Coast between Gopalpur and Chandbali, to the south of Puri around 3rd May afternoon with maximum sustained wind of speed 175-185 kmph gusting to 205 kmph,” said IMD.

Meanwhile, authorities in Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring states have been alerted to be ready to meet any eventuality due to 'Fani'.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary L.V. Subrahmanyam, on Tuesday, discussed the likely impact of the storm through video conference with chief secretaries of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Odisha and West Bengal, reported news agency IANS.

In the areas likely to be affected by 'Fani', the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Coast Guards, and shipping and telecom departments have been urged to be ready to extend their help.

The states have been requested to make arrangements for supply of drinking water and other relief materials.
