Extremely severe cyclone 'Fani' weakened a round lower as a still powerful very severe cyclone after landfall over the Odisha on Friday morning, but was expected to retain this status until 5.30 pm in the evening.

It lay centred over land over Coastal Odisha, about 10 km East of Bhubaneswar (Odisha) and 30 kilometres (km) south of Cuttack (Odisha) at around noon on Friday.

Cyclone in Bangladesh

India Meteorological Department (IMD) said it would continue to move North-North-East over land and weaken further into a severe cyclonic storm over a period of nine hours. The severe cyclone would then emerge into the plains of Bengal with wind speeds reaching up to 100 kilometres/hour (km/hr) gusting to 115 km/hr by tomorrow (Saturday) morning.

Further movement towards the North-North-East would take 'Fani' as a cyclone into Bangladesh by Saturday evening with wind speeds of up to 70 km/hr gusting to 80 km/hr. 

Earlier in the morning, 'Fani' had crossed the Odisha coast close to Puri with sustained wind speed of 175- to 185 km/hr gusting to 205 km/hr between 8 am am 10 am and weakened into a very severe cyclone.

The Meteorological Department has issued an outlook with respect to prevailing weather over Odisha and emerging conditions over Bengal and the North-Eastern States during the next few days.

Odisha: Moderate rainfall at most places and heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy falls at isolated places over North Odisha.
